Remembering the forgotten promises

by: Jim Chambers

Date: January 10, 2013

From Silentaria: “Rixa White had composed a draft version of the ‘Forgotten Promises’ melody in 1992. After 20 years, on December 2012, being emotionally touched by tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, he completed the initial melody and released it as a single track in honoring Sandy Hook Elementary School victims.”

However the song came into being, it was worth waiting for. It’s not the somber funeral dirge you might expect in the aftermath of such a tragedy of young lives suddenly taken away. Instead it’s a more upbeat melody remembering and honoring the children of Sandy Hook Elementary, a celebration of their lives, in my interpretation.

Unlike the ethereal synthesized music of Rixa White in more recent compositions, “Forgotten Promises” has a more conventional sound of piano and strings, but it’s just as mesmerizing.

A sensitive response to tragedy

by: Grady Harp

Date: January 10, 2013

'Forgotten Promises' Cover

For the growing audience to Silentaria no introduction is necessary . . .

The extremes of electronic music are fully explored in this dreamlike song from Silentaria. Not only is there an obvious piano keyboard in the foreground, but also voices and full orchestra and even guitar modes are added gradually until the entire spectrum of music is reproduced with great beauty. Apparently Rixa White had composed a draft version of “Forgotten Promises” melody in 1992. After 20 years, on December 2012, getting emotionally touched by tragedies like Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, he completed the initial melody and released it as a single track in honoring Sandy Hook Elementary School victims.

At a time when solace is much needed, the music by Rixa White in this `Forgotten Promises’ helps soothe away some of the pain we feel and helps us enter a better state of mind.

Darcia Helle’s interview of Rixa White

Silentaria: The Sounds of Silence

by Darcia Helle

January 10, 2013

My guest today is a musician, a poet, and a man of mystery.

Rixa White - Silentaria

Rixa White, the former spirited online entrepreneur hid his identity, transformed his destiny, returned to his roots and followed a new path in life through his music. As a self-taught Pianist, Keyboardist, Composer and poet, he was never an alien to music world as he started to play at age 6 and composed his first recitals when he was 14.

In 2010, he created Silentaria musical project by combining elements of Electronic, New Age, Contemporary Instrumental, Ambient and Progressive Rock genres. It is the reminiscence of Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Kitaro, Enya, Yanni, Enigma and Era.

Although he traveled the world for his business, it never stopped him from watching sunset in stonehenge, dancing with gypsies in Malaga (Spain), burying himself in Middle-Eastern sands, treading barefoot on the sacred soil in an Indian temple, walking along great wall in China, staying in a Japanese monastery, getting drunk at 5th avenue, losing his way in UN at Geneva, kneeling in Sistine Chapel and listening to lost souls in Rome Coliseum.

Nowadays, if not traveling, you can find him developing new gears and features for his music, composing new melodies in his personal studio for Silentaria or writing a new poem to share with fans and friends.

You are only photographed with a white mask, and have become known as ‘Man in White’. What is the reasoning behind wearing the mask?

For the last 10 years, I have only worn plain white and friends called me “Man in White” for it. After years of adventurous life, I found it peaceful although it is kind of hard to find white outfits with no visible signs or trademarks.

This outfit combined with an emotionless mask, for me it is the sign of a silent witness that demonstrates Emptiness on one hand and visualizes Rebellion against all masks we wear in life on the other hand. *One Mask To Hide Them All* YouTube video: http://youtu.be/OeFke2b2Plg

By wearing a mask, I am only hiding my other masks, so, I can play my true story and as Oscar Wilde noted: “Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth.”

Beautifully said.

Can you tell us a bit more about the Truth, and Rebellion against what?

The Truth can be anything in the form of beliefs, emotions, wishes or objections that we hide from society, our friends and even ourselves, because we are in fear and need to protect ourselves from losing or being judged as unacceptable.

My mask emphasizes the fact that we hide the truth behind the masks we wear and the roles we play every day.

Those masks made our inside so complex that an inner revolution is needed to observe, recognize and remove them from our true-self. (Read *A rebellion to empty our inner-side* for further explanation:

https://silentaria.com/2012/08/14/from-rebellion-to-emptiness-an-unconventionality-in-new-age-music)

In outside world, it might seem impossible to drop all masks that society forces us to wear, but we always have a chance to know them, eliminate some and choose new ones consciously.

You’re inspired by something called the ‘Wholeness and Emptiness philosophy’. Please explain a bit about that for us.

Emptiness is about being empty of judgment, thought, belief, etc. It helps us to look at an experience in a simple way and add nothing to and take nothing away from it. It is a journey to meet the wholeness within.

My entrepreneurship in IT business gave me a chance to travel a lot and seek for my unanswered questions in every corner of the world. Once in a Zen temple I learnt about Emptiness philosophy and wholeness concept and found out that the answers are hidden within and all I need to do is to empty the inner side to hear the voice of it.

Later, when I started to compose music again, I created *Silentaria to be “The Voice of Emptiness”*. Read more here:

What does Silentaria mean?

Silentaria is a made-up name with two parts of “Silent” and “aria”, indicating a quite hymn or tune. The combination is pointing to the silence of human inner side as a temple of silence which is the source of every sound.

What/Who are your musical influences?

I grew up listening to pop stars like Michel Jackson, Modern Talking, Madonna and Sandra along with Electronic New Age musicians like Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Enigma and Kitaro.

Growing up in a multi-cultural family, I listened a little bit of Classical music here and a little bit of World music there. Later during my travels I get influenced by acts like Yanni, Era, Gregorian Chants, Enya, Sacred Spirit and VAS.

Your music is mainly instrumental? Do you find it more difficult to tell a story without lyrics?

Actually, I have some unreleased tracks with lyrics, but I usually communicate better through instrumental music. However, when I feel the need to say something through words, I write a poem.

When I compose a music track, I use melodies, instruments, harmonies and beats to express my message and then I name the track and album to encapsulate my purpose through words.

I think the experience of listening to instrumental music is more pure and personal, like reading a book before watching it as a movie. You can not ignore lyrics in music, but it is easy to release your imagination to fly free, when listening to lyrics-free music. Once a novelist said about going
off into a world of his own while listening to “What’s Real?” album as a background for his thoughts and the vagaries of his imagination. He mentioned that it acted as a stimulus when he was working on scenes from his novel.

My profession is driven by words, so I’m especially curious about the creation of music without lyrics. What inspires you? Is there a story being told, or is it more about an emotion you’re feeling and expressing?

It is both.

When I am busy dealing with thoughts, emotions and visions in daily life, I often murmur melodies to myself and sometimes one of them captures my mind and I feel the need to write and store it in my track pool.

For an album or a sequel like “The Inner Journey” with a story-line, I design the story, then place the tracks by either choosing them from my track pool or write a new piece for that album or sequel.

In other cases, like music on demand for a program or movie, it is the subject or story that leads me to write proper melodies.

Your music is considered Electronic New Age, which people often associate with inspiration and peacefulness. But your song titles are either despairing like “Lament of Being”, “The Ruined Innocence”, “Deceived” or challenging like “Beyond Destiny”, “Oceans of Illusion”, “Curtain Over Eyes”. Please explain a little bit about it for us.

I have been criticized as an unorthodox in New Age music world and even been told that my rebellious music concept can create a chaos in beliefs and leads to melancholy, but as Nietzsche said “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star”. So, instead of forcing my audience to relaxation and serenity, I encourage them not to fear and experience life as it is.

There is no must on producing only optimistic and hopeful titles in New Age music and as a musician I produce my music to share my inner voice. During the production and naming process of each track, I remain loyal to my instincts about atmosphere of the melody, whether it is mysterious, sorrowful, rebellious, romantic, energetic or epic.

Anyway, styling and categorizing my music as New Age or Contemporary Instrumental is what music stores did, although this rebellious aspect of New Age music had been forgotten for a while.

Your poetry is quite moving. The video you put together for ‘They are Cruel’ is powerful. When you write poetry, do you sit with a specific intention? Or are the words born from emotion, rather than intent?

Thank you. I might consider publishing my poetry book more seriously now. (Read some of Rixa’s poems here:

https://silentaria.com/category/silentaria-blog/poems)

Writing poems is an immediate emotion expression for me. I never sit to write a poem with a specific intention.

Poem-videos like They are Cruel are made as a fusion of my music and poetry combined with photos and videos to add a visual dimension to my message.

I hope you enjoy watching Power of Peace and For What’s Worth Breathing as well.

Loved them both. :)

You have released two music albums for Silentaria project so far, what’s next?

The Beginning of the End and What’s Real? albums are the first two parts of “The Inner Journey” sequel. The next album in this sequel is “Who Knows?” that will be released on Spring 2013 and I will close “The Inner Journey” sequel by releasing two more albums till the end of 2014.

Also, apart from that sequel, I have been working on a separate album, named “Dark Light” for Silentaria project; that will be released by end of
2013.

“Forgotten Promises” single track released (News)

Silentaria ends 2012 by releasing “Forgotten Promises”, a holiday-themed single track.

After releasing two successive albums; The Beginning of the End in 2011 and What’s Real? in 2012, Silentaria, an Electronic New Age musical project by Rixa White, released their first single track, ”Forgotten Promises” which is a piano-based pop-like music piece, on December 25th 2012.

Rixa White had composed a draft version of “Forgotten Promises” melody in 1992. After 20 years, on December 2012, getting emotionally touched by tragedies like Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, he completed the initial melody and released it as a single track.

This Contemporary Instrumental track has a Christmas and New Year theme. It contains three main parts. The first two parts are mainly Piano-based followed by Violins and some mellow and soft Classic instruments such as Strings harmonies. A group of Electronic Synths can be heard in the background which add more depth to it. The final part starting from 02:35 mark, uses drums and percussions and repeats a background theme of Violins and Choirs, looping each time along with a different main melody played by Flutes and Guitars and fades out to the end of the track.

Forgotten Promises

“Forgotten Promises” track concept emphasizes the fact that by reviewing the years of our life, we’ll find out that in spite of all our promises and hopes, things have just got worse and somehow it seems something more than a simple promise is needed to make a real change in the world.

The track cover image illustrates a lonely white Grand Piano surrounded by snowflakes, stars, lights and pixie dusts sprinkling from its end, demonstrating Christmas and New Year theme. The icy blue background color projects coldness of hopelessness. The deep blue eye at the top left represents our inner consciousness that is a witness of our promises. Two semi-transparent Violins in both sides of the image remind the Violins and Strings used in the track harmonies.

Rixa White has published a poem with the same name of “Forgotten Promises” track and there is a music video with Christmas theme background videos and slideshows that combines the poem with this track.

About poem: The poem talks about current situation of the world in spite of promises that we make every new year to make a change.

Here is the poem. You can find it at “Forgotten Promises” poem page.

Another Christmas is coming
A new year will begin
I am looking through the window
Watching people under the snow

Some are with family, cooking and eating
Some are in the street, walking and shopping
Some are at home cleaning and decorating
Some are with friends packing and traveling

Everything seems fine
but when I look again …

Some are hungry, looking for food
Some are homeless, shivering in the cold
Some are lonely, sitting with sadness
Some are in pain, mourning for a loss

Another Christmas is coming
A new year will begin
I am thinking to myself
Is this the world we promised to build?

What happened to our world?
What happened to us?
What is going on?
Did we forget our promises?

We promised to NOTICE
We promised to ADJUST
We promised to PROTECT
Then why so much RAVAGE?

We promised to CARE
We promised to CARESS
We promised to FEED
Then why so much HUNGER?

We promised to RECEIVE
We promised to RELIEVE
We promised to FORGIVE
Then why so much REVENGE?

We promised to RESPECT
We promised to APPRECIATE
We promised to LOVE
Then why so much HATRED?

We promised to COMMUNICATE
We promised to COMPREHEND
We promised to CONNECT
Then why so much DISUNITY?

Another Christmas is coming
A new year will begin
How is it going to end?
What to promise again?

About music: The background music is “Diversion” which is the 10th track in “What’s Real?“, the Electronic New Age music album from Silentaria.

About text: The following lines are shown in this video:

What if your face is not you?
What if your face is just a mask?
a set of masks
chosen for you
This time, you choose
just one mask
your own mask
to transform your destiny
from a disfigured Erik to The Phantom of the Opera.
from a test subject to V for Vendetta
a mask to tell your story
a mask to tell the truth
Awaken the rebel within
against all other masks
to hide them all

Choose your mask, Be the change

Universal Hymn or Alien Communication

Who was communicating with astronauts through haunting New Age Music? Was it God? Divine? Universe? or Aliens?

Astronaut walking on moon

When the space craft was orbiting around the dark side of the moon and lost radio contact with Earth, the astronauts’ radio channel filled with a haunting endless melody, while they expected radio silence behind the moon.

They wonder where the source is. Why it is communicating through music? Is this voice less hymn the universal language?

Was it God, Divine, Universe or Nature talking to them through reminiscent of a tonal-based New Age music or probably our ancient alien ancestors were trying to communicate with us? How to translate it to words?

On the other hand, is it a peace message or a warning to leave?

The source of the sound was not as supernatural as our thoughts, since the haunting New Age music source was inter-solar and as usual there was a scientific answer for it.

Jupiter planet in a starry space

Jupiter’s magnetosphere is responsible for overtaking astronauts’ communication radio channel. With no other closer and more powerful signal to override Jupiter’s influence, the astronauts were treated to the kind of haunting New Age music track.

It might not satisfy our delusional mind expectations, but let’s not forget that in ancient Roman myths, Jupiter is the king of the Gods, the God of Heaven and Earth and of all the Olympian Gods, and also known as the Justice God.

So, who knows? Beside scientific explanation by NASA for this endless melody, it is the universal power of Jupiter that generates and communicates in a haunting New Age music.

Rebellious Electronic Music: Chaos in beliefs or living life to the fullest?

Is there a prescription to stop living in fear and guilt? Is rebellion one of the main ingredients? What if a masked man in white holds a key to answer? Will you listen to his music as a cure?

Rixa White - Silentaria

The rebellion concept has played a significant role in the evolution of contemporary music. Concepts and attitudes along with costumes and hairstyles have expressed various forms of rebellion in music history. Silentaria; an Electronic New Age musical project created by Rixa White; is intended to be in contact with that potentially rebellious part of us and awaken the rebel who is hiding somewhere inside.

Rixa White, a long-haired man in plain white, hiding his face behind a white mask is Silentaria iconic image. He might be the first New Age artist that purposefully focuses on encouraging his listeners not to fear, stop feeling guilty and live the life to the fullest, instead of forcing them to relaxation and serenity. Silentaria opposes presenting any step-by-step instructions or belief systems since persuading a particular constant direction will lead to conformity and obedience.

Beside his music, Rixa White’s poems and videos are in compliance with the aforementioned concept. For instance, against all advices that ask you to drop all masks from your face, “One Mask To Hide Them All” video emphasizes the doubt that even your face might be another mask chosen for you and encourages you to choose your own mask to tell the truth and become the change.

With such a rebellious vision, he has been criticized as an unorthodox in New Age music world and been told that his rebellious music concept can create a chaos in beliefs and lead to melancholy. “It is my intention to release the well-hidden deep chronic sense of insecurity and dissatisfaction in my listeners. I insist on facing the life burden instead of pretending that everything is fine outside while suffering inside. Rixa White said as an agnostic atheist musician and added a quote from Nietzsche: “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star” to answer the critics”.

Rixa White - Silentaria

Silentaria’s multi-dimensional fusion music benefits from emotional melodies and diverse instruments and devices to create multi-layered themes with cinematic atmospheres, progressive orchestrations, polyphonic harmonies and hypnotic rhythms, that present elements of mystery, sorrow, epic, rebellion, romance and energy.

With either despairing or challenging track and album names, it might be impossible to get caught in usual Electronic New Age music monotony while listening to Silentaria music. It turns from soothing instrumental (Farewell, Sorrowful Truth) into cinematic Epic (One Last Quest, Return of the Lost) and from energizing Electronic (Beyond Destiny, Real Fantasia) into thundering Rock (Deceived, Curtains over Eyes). It is quite easy to surround yourself by this hybrid music that demands your sub-conscious for exploring strange sonic shores.

Silentaria Delivers Deep Music and Deep Silence

by: Mike Borger

Date: October 7, 2012

What’s Real?” album from Silentaria is a stunning collection of compelling music that cannot be ignored. The music is gentle, but has great momentum. While engaging the mind and spirit in silence, it moves you toward deep realms of thought, emotion and experience. Accomplished musician, poet, electronic keyboardist, and spiritual visionary Rixa White has assembled a collection of songs that succeeds on multiple levels.

As enjoyable music, these songs fill your room and mind with expansive electronica that is peaceful and yet pleasantly stimulating. The overall experience is one of infinitely enjoyable washes of sound that combine with elements of strings, percussion, and gently driven electronic rhythms. This artist knows how to paint with sound, and the result is a panoply of compositions that entertains the mind while soothing the spirit, yet also engages the emotions.

These songs also convey the message of beauty that is at once strong and fragile. Like our own inner being, this music has gross and subtle aspects. The moving chord progressions, melodies, and washes of electronic sound have the strong presence of solid matter and moving forces. But there is a more subtle underlying unity of sound and awareness that somehow pulls it all together. This is unity in diversity, diversity in unity – and it is most profound and beckons the listener to experience activity while feeling the silence that underlies everything.

'What's Real?' Album Poster

Any music that creates the kind of wide-open sound of “Silentaria: the Voice of Emptiness” must be called Space Music. Music that pulls together the busy surface level of life and the deep silence that underlies everything is not only Space Music but profoundly spiritual as well. When music like this promotes a unity of mind and body, silence and sound, diversity and unity it is by definition Healing Music. I regard the music of this album profound and effective Healing Space Music.

You will enjoy this music, no matter what your musical background or listening preferences. This music is beautiful and harmonious, and those who like classical music will doubtless like “Silentaria.” Those who like the sounds of electronic artists like Vangelis (“Antarctica,” “Blade Runner Soundtrack”), Ray Lynch (“The Sky of Mind,” “Nothing Above My Head But the Evening”), and Suzanne Ciani (“Seven Waves,” “Hotel Luna”) will immediately like this music. If you are new to synthesizer oriented music, this album is an excellent introduction as you will hear fine musicianship with a broad range of style and sound. Those who like to work with beautiful and deep music as a companion will dearly love this music.

Rixa White has truly demonstrated great musicianship in composition, arrangement, recording and presentation of this album. He has succeeded in bridging the world of silence with the world of action. The resulting music is both profound and simple, and creates a positive, healing effect in our world. This is music you ought to explore, experience, and enjoy.
